SULAIMANI – Members of Sulaimani’s security and intelligence agency (Asayish) attacked a team of NRT journalists covering protests in the city on Saturday. NRT cameraman Malband Salar was injured when security forces took his camera, in an effort to prevent him from filming. Tensions are high in the city as protesters have gathered in the Sulaimani bazaar and surrounding areas, following days of anti-government demonstrations in the Kurdistan Region’s eastern cities and towns. Video footage from the area showed riot police blocking the bazaar’s entrance at Salim Street – Sulaimani’s main thoroughfare. A Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) office located 200 meters from that entrance to the bazaar was the scene of intense clashes during the 2011 demonstrations that left two protesters dead. Kurdish media outlet Rudaw’s offices in Sulaimani were also attacked Saturday afternoon as protesters moved west of the bazaar.
